Biography

Dr. Alessio Giardino is a senior climate adaptation specialist at the Water Sector Group of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). In his current position, he is responsible for leading knowledge and innovation work to inform the design of climate change and resilience investment projects in the water sector.

Prior to joining ADB, Alessio worked at Deltares (the Netherlands) as senior climate adaptation and disaster risk management specialist, and programme manager. He provided technical support and strategic advice to implement projects and make them bankable. He has worked closely with the World Bank, ADB, the GCF, and several national governments in Africa, Asia, South America and the Pacific.

Alessio is also a lead specialist in adaptation work in Small Island Development States (SIDS). He has accumulated wide project experience in SIDS across all different regions. Additionally, he is actively involved as a reviewer for IPCC on the topic of climate change impacts on small islands.

Alessio holds an MSc in Environmental Engineering (cum laude) from the University of Turin in Italy, and a PhD in Coastal Engineering from KU Leuven in Belgium. He is author of dozens of Journal publications on the topic of climate adaptation and disaster risk management.
