The Sustainable Water Alliance

A social business to change the way the world of water works

What is it?

The Sustainable Water Alliance will be a catalyst for change in the water sector. We are setting it up as a social business - i.e. one which makes profits in order to achieve a social goal rather than to enrich its shareholders. Our trading activities will include publishing a magazine called Sustainable Water, and operating conferences on the sustainable water theme. Both will have a campaigning agenda. These activities will help build the contacts that we can use to set up a consulting network and sustainable investment brokerage which will work with forward-looking water utilities, industry experts and the new generation of venture philanthropists to make things happen. Any operating surpluses will be ploughed back into promotion, lobbying and developing the business.

          •  Publicising best practice in water tariff
              reform around the world

          • Promoting the financial
             independence of water utilities

          • Developing new financial models
             for low-income communities

          • Encouraging conservation and potable
water reuse as the most sustainable
             solutions to water scarcity

          • Supporting renewable water
             technologies including low-energy
             desalination

          • Advocating the adjudication of
water rights to protect nature and
allow for the peaceful transfer of
             water between users

EarthWater Global

EarthWater Global identifies, develops and manages large-scale, sustainable groundwater resources. EarthWater has developed and demonstrated a revolutionary concept of how fresh water is transmitted through tectonic fractures in bedrock and stored in "Megawatersheds". Megawatersheds are naturally recharged groundwater systems that are strongly controlled by fault and bedrock fracture zones, zones that may extend from tens to thousands of square kilometers. iGlobal Water

iGlobal Water has exclusive long-term agreements to source and export glacier water from Iceland. The sourcing of this water has no environmental impact, and does not interrupt the natural flow of fresh water to the sea. IGlobal Water products are sustainable and carbon neutral as their operations run on green power sources including hydro power and geothermal energy.

Why will it work?

Sustainable water really is a triple win: for the environment, for society and for business. We can make campaigning for it an unbeatable business proposition.

Advertisers will want to support our publications because they
know that the cause the magazine is supporting is both good for
their business and makes their business look good.

Delegates will want to attend our conferences because they
know that they will be part of something that will make a
difference.

Our consultancy network and investment brokerage will be
successful because it will bring together the best experts, the
best opportunities, and the best investors to make a difference
in the world.

The business will be owned by a charitable trust and funded by zero interest loans from supporters. These will be repaid over time. The real dividend will be an increase in sustainable water management around the world.

What is next?

We need supporters and investors to get this off the ground. If you share our vision for a sustainable world of water,
and want to be part of our network for change, come along to the launch of the initiative in London on 21st-22nd April 2008
at the Water, Finance and Sustainability 2008 conference. Nobel Peace Prize winner and social business guru Muhammad Yunus will make a speech on the subject of social businesses in water on the evening of 21st April, while the official launch of the Alliance will take place the following evening.

At the launch we will present a business plan for the Alliance, and in conversation with you develop further ideas to guarantee the success of the project. See you there!
